In this guitar lesson, you’ll learn how to play the major scale in 3rds.
You’ll play it using thirds in the G major scale.
Essentially, you’ll play each degree of the scale + the 3rd from each of those degrees.

This is the major scale in 3rds guitar tab.
The tab uses the G major scale, giving you this diatonic sequence of chords: Gmaj – Amin – Bmin – Cmaj – Dmaj – Emin – F#dim
To play in thirds, you’ll take each note from the scale and play the note up 2 degrees from that note. Here’s what that looks like with each note:
- G to B
- A to C
- B to D
- C to E
- D to F#
- E to G
- F# to A
